What’s your specialty?  Anesthesiology

How many children do you have, and what are their ages?  I have three children, ages 22, 19 and 18.

What was the biggest challenge you faced as a dad, and how did you overcome it?  Perhaps my greatest challenge was finding the time to be a dad! Especially during medical school and residency, and to some extent while working 80 to 100 hour weeks in private practice (with about 2 weeks a year of vacation), my life for 20 years in private practice has been challenging. Making ends meet is not as simple as the public may imagine.

With educational school loans (I paid 100 percent of my expenses) and decreasing reimbursement, I was working most of the time. In other words, a lot of times I was not around to experience and enjoy the usual “American” lifestyle and community events.

What’s the one bit of advice about fatherhood you wish someone had given you much earlier? I wish someone had told me the value of moving to a small town, having decreased expenses, making less, working less, and enjoying your kids while they are young. This is what I should have done.

What’s the most underrated thing about fatherhood? Just being around; just being there. Unfortunately, I missed out on a lot of this.

Career, marriage, kids … How does a guy stay sane? I mistakenly did not “shake” loose the hard-driving, intense medical field competitive nature that is necessary to get into and survive medical school and residency training, board exams, etc. I should have just let it go and begin enjoying life at age 30. The last two decades of private practice cannot be recovered. I have accomplished a lot, but still that time is gone.

Dr. Dorin’s Q&As

I’m pregnant and may need anesthesia to have a tooth pulled: Will anesthesia affect my baby?

My two-year-old is having “pressure equalization” tubes put in his ear for chronic ear infections: Can I go back to the operating room with him until he’s asleep?
